Our Professional Development Guide offers summaries to some of our most popular in-person trainings and webinars developed by our team of specialists that are available year-round upon request. These are offered at no-cost for Indiana public LEA employees.

AAC Evaluations with David Jackson (1-3 hours)

Description: Where do I begin? Let's talk about where to start and what to do with your results. This session will highlight how to initiate the AAC evaluation, assessment considerations, team members, tools for assessment, data collection and what to do next in the process. You will learn simple tools and ideas that you can implement right away!

Access for All Young Learners with Jessica Conrad (1-7 hours)

Description: Designed specifically for teachers, therapists, assistants, and administrators working with young students ages 3-10, this hands-on seminar will explore the newest and best technology and tools to support all learners in early literacy, communication, mathematics, social skills and more. This seminar will have a particular focus on supporting students who are non-verbal or children who benefit from visual support for language, behavior, and literacy. We will end our time playing with free or nearly free and easy ideas to make your instruction more accessible to every learner.

Amazing Apple Accessibility Features Literacy and Beyond with Lisa Benfield (1 hour)

Description: During this training, attendees will go step by step through the built-in Apple iOS Accessibility features and their use in the classroom to increase access to curriculum. Specific examples and everyday applications for use of an iPad as a tool for Assistive Technology will be demonstrated.

Assistive Technology for Emotional and Behavioral Disorders with Lisa Benfield (1-3 hours)

Description: From low tech to high tech, assistive technology can support students with emotional and behavioral concerns to access their education on a daily basis. This training will equip attendees with multiple strategies for regulating behavior and emotions, following rules and routines, accessing and developing coping and self-regulation skills, and engaging in academic tasks. The training can be tailored to the needs of the audience.

AT Solutions on the Go with David Jackson (1 hour)

Description: Mounts, Plastics, 3D Printing, Tablet Stands, Accessibility Ideas and More. Learn inexpensive and easy to use solutions to help your students succeed in the classroom and improve access to communication. Lots of demonstrations on how to make and adapt solutions for Optical Character Recognition (OCR), iPad stand, slant boards, eyegaze, PODD, and more! Readily available at your local hardware store, election signs, PVC, CPVC, some tools and you are in business! Detailed instructions will be provided.

Autism Spectrum: High Expectations for ALL Students with Kelli Suding (1 hour)

Description: This is a beginner session that tackles the complex needs of students on the autism spectrum with discussions and strategies to support behavior and classroom engagement through teaching executive functioning skills and implementation of the Universal Design for Learning principles. This is a focus on presuming competence and maintaining high expectations for ALL students. Attendees will leave with an understanding of the "why" some behaviors seem perplexing and multiple methods to utilize in supporting students on the spectrum to become independent learners, while demonstrating tools that can be used in the school setting.

Built in Accessibility for students with Blindness and Low Vision: Choose your platform with Bev Sharritt (1-3 hours)

Captions for All: The Writing's on the Wall with Jena Fahlbush and Katie Taylor (1 hour)

Description: Through demonstrations and tool exploration, you will learn how to implement the use of captions in your classroom as you facilitate each of the UDL guidelines - engagement, representation, and action and expression. Choosing a Braille Display: Student-Centered Literacy with Bev Sharritt (1 hour)

Description: Choosing a Braille display: student-centered literacy. Are you considering the purchase of a refreshable Braille display? This training will cover factors to consider, and important questions to ask, and then strategies for developing an effective device trial.

Chromebook/Google Tablet Accessibility with Amanda Crecelius (1-2 hours)

Description: Training on accessibility features of the Chromebook and/or Google Tablet, like dictation, text-to-speech, enlarged cursor, a library for shortcut keys, and more. This is designed to help educators locate, activate, and understand the use of accessibility features of the Chromebook. There will be some extra extension features and accessibility tips for non-Chromebook users and fun teacher extensions to help build relationships with students in a virtual world. Each feature, app, and/or extension supports the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework by encouraging multiple means of engagement during online lessons or as students work independently in and outside of the classroom.

Design with the Right tools - Mystery Tech Challenge with All Specialists (Varies)

Target Audience: All Educators, Administrators, and Paraprofessionals

Description: Creating an engaging classroom including multiple means for expression and reception can be fun and exciting! Come learn about new pieces of educational technology in this hands-on exploration session! No experience is needed and open minds are welcome!
In this interactive session, participants will explore various assistive technology tools and learn about best practice use and assessment. This session will address assistive technology within universally designed educational environments with practical suggestions across the community, school, and home.

Desmos Accessibility for Students with Blindness and Low Vision with Bev Sharritt (1.5 hours)

Description: The Desmos suite of math tools was designed from the ground up to be accessible for students with blindness and low vision. The Desmos calculators will be the online tools available for the new ILEARN Test beginning 2019. This training will help you prepare your students to access the calculators and customize accessibility to enhance their daily math instruction.

DHH in the UDL World (Deaf/Hard of Hearing in the Universal Design for the Learning World) with Katie Taylor (1 hour)

Digital ≠ Accessible: Learn How to Create Accessible Content in Canvas & Beyond with Jena Fahlbush (1-3 hours)

Description: In an age of distance/continuous learning, we must ensure that we are creating accessible digital resources for all students. In this webinar, attendees will explore essential design & accessibility elements to include when creating new digital content for students and families. **This course can be tailored to be specific to Canvas or school website accessibility during content creation.**

DRM: What Is It and How Do I Become One? with Martha Hammond (1 hour)

Description: This training will explain the tasks required of a Digital Rights Manager (DRM), and the role of the ICAM (Indiana Center for Accessible Materials) in acquiring AEM (Accessible Educational Materials) for students with documented print disabilities.

ELLevating ALL: Overlapping Strategies for ELL and Students with SLD with Amanda Crecelius (1-3 hours)

Target Audience: All General and Special Education Teachers, Administrators, and/or Paraprofessionals

Description: This training will provide resources and tools for English Language Learners (ELLs) and/or students with Specific Learning Difference (SLD), including dyslexia. This is an overview of overlapping strategies for promoting literacy for ELLs and students with SLD with a focus on how Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to eliminate barriers for ELLs/students with SLD and all students. Tools and strategies are linked to the Science of Reading. Both low tech and high tech options are presented to help provide flexibility to reflect a UDL approach to meet the needs of ALL the students in the classroom (virtual, hybrid, or in-person).

Eye See AAC with Jessica Conrad and Bev Sharritt (3 hours)

Description: Jessica Conrad, Specialist for Early Intervention and Augmentative and Alternative Communication, and Bev Sharritt, Specialist for Blind Low Vision AT and AEM will present together strategies for communication and language development for students with blindness and low vision. This afternoon session will explore different accommodations for specific functional eye conditions, and share ideas for collaboration between the SLP, classroom teacher, and the BLV teacher.

I Repeat, "It's NOT Cheating" with Kelli Suding (1 hour)

Description: “That’s cheating. They need to do that by themselves,” are often comments aligned with the use of appropriate accommodations of accessible educational materials (AEM) and assistive technology (AT) for students with disabilities. But how can we promote a culture of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and at the same time step outside of our “No, it’s not cheating” echo chamber to have meaningful conversations with educators who may see accommodations as a crutch? This session will explore ways to debunk the mindset of 'it's cheating’ through personal stories, short simulations, discussion of the different skill sets of reading and the “what” is accessible educational materials (AEM) and most importantly the “why.”

I Speak/I Learn with AAC with Jessica Conrad (2-7 hours)

Description: Participants will learn the basics of supporting AAC users (and others who benefit from visual representation for language and literacy) with core vocabulary. Skills include Aided Language Input (ALI), appropriate cueing hierarchy, and core language supports and ideas. Then we will be putting what we learn into action. This facilitative hour is focused on identifying opportunities and barriers in your classroom, problem-solving and organizing resources, the descriptive teaching model, and appropriate goal and data collection for AAC users.

ICAM Digital Files: Delivery and what to do once you receive them! with Jeff Bond (1 hour)

Description: With a new CEO and mission “to empower every person on the planet to achieve more,” Microsoft has really upped their game when it comes to the built-in accessibility features throughout Windows and Office 365. Join Jena Fahlbush to explore some of the latest features that could improve your students’ access to the curriculum. Text suggestions, dictation, and captioning are a few of the tools that will be highlighted. Please note - to access these features, you must have the 2016 version of Office 365 and Windows 10 version 1803. In many cases, Windows can be updated to the latest version for free.

Supporting Positive Behaviors for Students with Autism with Jena Fahlbush (1 hour)

Switches and Recipes for Literacy,  AAC, Apps & Games with David Jackson (1-3 hours)

Description: There's an app for that! Over this series of H-Appy Hour webinars, a variety of app categories will be shared. Today's training will be all about apps that can be used with switches, recipes or Head Control. This training will demonstrate how to connect a mouse, switch, create a recipe and how to use head control. These options will enable students to access, communicate and engage using iOS devices. These solutions apply primarily for iOS apps but some can be used on WIN, MAC and Chromebook.

What the HAT?! (Hearing Assistive Technology) with Katie Taylor (1-3 hours)
